This entry is something I never expected to write. Michael Brooks, a left-wing political commentator, writer and and contributor for The Majority Report, died suddenly today of an unreported illness. Michael had a profound impact on me and the development of my political education over the years. He struggled early in his life and worked his ass off to get where he did. When he finally started his own show, he knew he had to focus on international solidarity and changing the discourse on foreign policy in this country. Besides his contributions to politics, he was a great human being and I’ve been lucky to have a few interactions with him on Twitter over the years. I first got to know Michael through watching The Majority Report. He was a perfect compliment to Sam Seder and the two had great chemistry. Michael touched so many people from left Twitter to the mainstream pundits on cable news. Seeing this outpouring of support from such a wide range of people should tell you about who he was as a man more than anything else. I feel so bad for Matt Lech, Sam Seder, Jamie, Brendan and everyone else who has contributed to The Majority Report over the years. It’s like a family over there and I could only imagine what they are going through right now. 2020 has been a tough year so far and many great people have been taken from us too soon. Someone said on Twitter that this is the “Kobe moment for the left.” Although Michael was taken too soon, his memory will live on as we try and build a better future through international solidarity and mass organizing. That’s what he would have wanted. Rest in Power Michael!
