We all know of the 19th century snake oil salesmen and all of the fake remedies that they marketed from the sprawling east coast megacities to the tiniest west coast boomtowns. But today, hucksters have more advanced methods at their disposal to target even more vulnerable groups of people (Alex Jones’s protein pills, televangelists, gold buyers etc.) But what goes often unnoticed in society is that during times of crises (like in a pandemic), new kinds of grifts and junk science emerge and pollute our public discourse. We’ve seen recently junk science making its way into medical journals covering COVID-19. This should be alarming because the public needs accurate and unbiased public health information when assessing risk in their daily lives. So the point of this board today is for people to share any examples of junk science they’ve come across or have seen circulated on the internet recently. Please feel free to share below…
